NOTICE TO USERS:  Soil Moisture Equation Change Coming Soon

New Soil Moisture Equation Change

The NRCS, in cooperation with the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), will be implementing a new Soil Moisture Equation based upon work completed by ARS. This work has been peer reviewed and published (Seyfried, M.S., L.E. Grant, E.Du, and K Humes. 2005. Dielectric loss and calibration of the hydra probe soil water sensor. Vadose Zone J. 4:1070-1079).

The new equation, which better tracks the actual soil moisture by volume, will be used to convert all historical and future sensor data to soil moisture data.  This change will affect all SCAN stations and enhanced SNOTEL stations.

This equation will be implemented December 2009.

The Natural Resources Conservation Service provides leadership in a partnership effort to help people conserve, maintain, and improve our natural resources and environment.
